WIND SYMPHONY
This is Ocean Lakes High School’s premier wind ensemble for top-performing woodwind, brass, and percussion students. This class will include auditioning for chair placement and principal status. Topics covered in this class are: Major and Minor Scales, Solfege and Aural Skills, Music Theory, Music History and Band Literature. Students in this class attend the State Concert Assessment performing VBODA Grade V-VI literature. Students are expected to audition for All-District Band in the Spring semester. Students will need to attend one to two after school rehearsals before each performance. In following years, participation in Wind Symphony will be by audition only.
SYMPHONIC BRASS
This course is open to all concert brass students in the following sections: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba. This is the brass instrumentalist section of the “Symphonic Band” who performs at the District Concert Assessment each Spring, performing VBODA Grade IV literature. Topics covered in this class are: Major and Minor Scales, Solfege and Aural Skills, Music Theory, Music History and Band Literature. Students will need to attend two after school rehearsals before each performance.
SYMPHONIC WOODWINDS
This course is open to all concert woodwind students in the following sections: Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, and Bassoon. This is the woodwind instrumentalist section of the “Symphonic Band” who performs at the District Concert Assessment each Spring, performing VBODA Grade IV literature. Topics covered in this class are: Major and Minor Scales, Solfege and Aural Skills, Music Theory, Music History and Band Literature. Students will need to attend two after school rehearsals before each performance.
PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
This course is open to all percussion students who wish to enroll in a band class. Additionally, students with no prior music knowledge are invited to join this class! This class serves as an entry-level band class that teaches students how to read music and perform on percussion instruments. Some students enrolled in this class will perform with “Symphonic Band” on all concert band concerts, and some students will perform with the “Wind Symphony”. Please read those descriptions to learn more details about those ensembles. In addition to rehearsal of concert band music, students will rehearse and perform in a percussion ensemble and receive an in-depth education on each percussion instrument. Students are also required to purchase their own sticks and are encouraged to acquire their own snare pad, snare stand, and mallets.
JAZZ BAND
This course is open to experienced and inexperienced students alike who are interested in learning more about jazz music. This class serves both as a beginning and advanced-level band class that teaches students how to read and perform all kinds of jazz music. Students will rehearse and perform in a small ensemble and receive an in-depth education on each instrument. Instruments welcome are saxophone, trombone, trumpet, percussion, guitar, bass guitar, and piano.
Extracurricular Ensembles
Marching Dolphins
This elite student ensemble is open to all students. No audition is required of wind players. Color Guard and Percussion auditions will take place in June of the previous school year. Students will have the opportunity to participate in Spirit Walks around the school, stand performances at home football games, a themed half-time performance each football game, and participate in many marching band competitions and events. Summer band camp is required, along with after school practices and performances. Marching Band season runs from August-November. A participation fee and uniform fee is required.
Indoor Color Guard
Indoor Winter Guard is an indoor color guard experience offered in the Winter season of November-March. This is a competitive color guard group who prepares a themed show and competes in local competitions. Winter guard is run by a color guard staff who teach students how to perform on different forms of equipment such as rifle, flag, and saber. Auditions for Indoor Winter Guard will take place in November. A participation fee and purchase of a uniform is required. Please note that Ms. Proffitt is the SPONSOR of indoor ensembles, but not the director. Ms. Proffitt oversees the directors and logistics of each group. Mrs. Shannon Roberts is the Director of the Indoor Color Guard.
Indoor Percussion Ensemble
Indoor Percussion is a competitive percussion group who prepares a themed show and competes in local competitions in the Winter season of November-March. Indoor percussion is run by a percussion staff who teach students how to perform on different percussion instruments such as snare, tenor, bass drum, auxiliary, and mallets. Auditions for Indoor Percussion will take place in November. A participation fee and purchase of a uniform is required. Please note that Ms. Proffitt is the SPONSOR of indoor ensembles, but not the director. Ms. Proffitt oversees the directors and logistics of each group. Mr. Mike Jones is the Director of the Indoor Percussion Ensemble.
Pit Orchestra
This ensemble beautifully enhances the Ocean Lakes Theatre Company's spring musical each year. Participation is based on the required instrumentation, with seniority taken into account. However, auditions may also be held to select members. The pit orchestra performs exclusively in the spring and is open to all experienced student musicians. The Pit Orchestra is also overseen by Mrs. Angela Henry (orchestra) and Mr. Claude Blanchard (theater).
